What’s it like here?

We have a fantastic team of people here at Metro and we try really hard to make sure it’s a great place to work. Our Head of Talent and Culture focuses solely on ensuring we have the best trained, motivated and developed team in media.

Read on to see how we achieve this modest goal…

From the moment you step foot on the Metro carpet, the focus will be you and your development. An induction day will help you get your bearings and during your first three months, your manager will take you through a tailor made programme to give you all the tools required to succeed in your role.

We make sure everyone has the chance for regular 1-2-1 sessions with their managers and an annual appraisal with personal development plans aimed at helping everyone achieve their goals for the year ahead. We also have stacks of training options, both internal and external to choose from.

Metro aims to be a flexible employer and offers a wide range of work-life balance initiatives to make working life just that little bit nicer. Recently we launched a Cycle to Work scheme, Birthday holidays, 10am starts and 3pm finishes.

We have a free on-site gym but have also arranged a number of corporate gym memberships for those that would rather train somewhere nearer home.

Urban Action
Metro is always keen to give something back so we were chuffed to bits when we came up with the idea of Urban Action helping charities to help others. We have picked two charities to work with initially, with plans to build on this once we find our feet.

We’ll work in partnership with charities to help advertise their own campaigns, come up with new fundraising ideas and get involved in various volunteering projects throughout the year.

Our aims
We’ve given ourselves the tall task of raising enough cash to build a new Kids Company centre and buy a mini bus for My Generation to use as a pop up centre.

Metro has stumped up some cash to get the ball rolling and we hope that our staff and readers will get behind us to enable us to reach our goals for the charities.

Meet the charities
The charities that we are working with this year are;

Kids Company
Provides practical, emotional and educational support to inner-city children and young adults. They reach 14,000 children across London who are often exposed to relentless violence, chronic abuse and neglect.

My Generation
Aims to break the cycle of poverty, crime and ill-health in struggling communities. Their vision is to raise aspirations through offering practical support and developing key skills.

We’ll be helping both charities with various campaigns throughout the year so check back here to see how we’re getting on.

We try to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, buy green wherever possible and use our media brand to support green campaigns and initiatives. Here’s just some of the things we do:

  • Make sure Metro reaches urbanites’ hands by offsetting 100% of the carbon emissions caused
    by our distribution.
  • Get audited by the Mayor’s Green Procurement Code - this verifies that we’re a green operation and getting greener all the time. We’re the only newspaper that does this!
  • Lead recycling campaigns of our own, while also sponsoring and getting involved in media partnerships to support green initiatives
  • Metro is supporting Treeathlon, organised by charity Trees for Cities. The event raises money for
tree-planting projects everywhere from London’s East End to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Click here
    to learn more
  • Have a green office – we drink out of recycled cups, use green stationery, travel in carbon neutral taxis, and even work under eco-friendly lighting
    here at Metro!

We recently held a Green Day to raise staff awareness on green issues. 2009 also saw the first Stationery Amnesty.

It’s not all work, we do have time for some fun too.

Our Metro Vision team organise heaps of events for the office, from parties and informal after work drinks, to fresh fruit baskets and massages at work. We’ll organise prize draws for dinner at a top restaurant or a night in a smart hotel but the thing that goes down best of all amongst staff here, is our famous Cheese Tuesdays.
Metro people love their cheese and crackers!
